Nerds with Words: Video Game Survey

This was something I put together on Tumblr because I couldn’t find a good one, and figured would share with you all. Over the next few weeks, we’ll also do our best to answer these on Dual Wielding podcast.

  2. 1. Wii, PS2, PS3, PSP, PS Vita, Xbox 360, 3DS (JP), Gameboy Color.
    2. PS4, 3DS (US (If the region lock isn’t gone)).
    3. SRPG, RPG, Action RPG.
    4. Yes, I used to be only interested in platformers. I think when I received a PS2 for Christmas, the games I received (Orphan: Scion of Sorcery, Dynasty Warriors 2) weren’t the same as what I was accustomed to.
    5. Disgaea 3 on PS Vita. So far it’s been very enjoyable.
    6. Monster Hunter 4, Jojo’s All Star Battle Royale, Sen no Kiseki, Pikmin 3, Dragon’s Crown, SRT OG Saga: Masou Kishin III, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD, Kingdom Hearts 1.5, Ragnarok Odyssey Ace, Spelunky HD.
    7. I enjoy both social gaming (Playing with friends online or locally), but also enjoying single player games by myself.
    8. Noctis from FFXV. Really interested in that universe.
    9. When you play a game and have a scripted/boss fight only because of a misunderstanding in the story/narrative.
    10. Stop using the phrase “Please understand.” / Remove the 3DS region lock.
    11. People arguing with eachother. Whether it be game preference or console choice, it doesn’t warrant malice. People just need to be chill again.
    12. NeoGAF.
    13. Not hand hold. If every game had an option that said “Hey, there’s only so many buttons on a controller, figure this out without us telling you to hit X” I’d enjoy that.
    14. To have something to talk about.
    15. Oracle of Ages/Seasons (GBC) or Chameleon Twist (N64)
    16. Take Gundam Extreme Vs, and throw in like 30 popular mecha anime characters. That is what I would want.
    17. While I would love a Legend of Zelda movie, I think Dark Souls has a crazy enough universe to make a movie about.
    18. I believe anything could be addictive given the right environment.
    19. If I’m at the very end of the game (Or if the game really has grabbed me), yes.
    20. When I was 4, my guardian at the time had a Sega Genesis. From there it was just natural progression.
    21. The one who plays games and likes talking to people about them.
    22. Word of mouth (Or Twitter) is the one that sways me the most. I wouldn’t have picked up at least 3 of the games this year had it not been for recommendations from others I trust in that respect.
    23. An absolutely insane plot with REALLY over the top combat. Maybe some crazy powers? I don’t even know!
    24. Gameplay > Graphics 99% of the time. There are still SNES games and N64 games that trump current day games because they just play fantastically.
    25. Gameplay > Soundtrack/Story/Characters > Multiplayer > Graphics > Achievements
    26. A little less than 20 hours.
    27. Yes. It’s pretty substantial (Maybe 100+)
    28. While I play games, typically not. While I watch streams of games, all the time.
    29. I attended my first convention in general this past March (PAX East 2013).
    30. Yes and no. I play a lot of games with combat, it is violence, but against fictitious beings or monsters?
    31. This is gonna be really lame, but in Mischief Makers for N64, the first boss you fight against is a crocodile scientist and his “son” (A red dragon creature). The scientist orders his son to then “contain” your ally, which the dragon does by eating (and chewing) and then swallowing him. This is coupled with the ally screaming out the main characters name before the very first bite. It was a pretty traumatizing thing to watch when I was about 6-7.
    32. Not really, I just play whatever is fun.
    33. I would consider some games to have “Being artistic” as it’s goal, but for the media in general, No.
    34. I consider myself someone who plays games, likes talking about it, and just wants to meet new people who also like them.

  3. Electivirus says:

    1. GBA Micro, DS Lite, 2 3DS XLs, PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, Wii, PSP

    2. PS4 and Vita. The former for Final Fantasy XV/Kingdom Hearts III, and the latter for PS+ stuff and Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD.

    3. Platformers and RPGs (JRPGs in particular). Especially ones geared towards gameplay rather than story/plot.

    4. Definitely. I’ve grown a lot more impatient with difficult games in the past few years. I don’t particularly like being stuck on one segment for very long; it gets boring quite easily and I tend to move on to another game if that happens.

    5. A number of games. Final Fantasy XIII (going for the platinum) and Animal Crossing among them. I’m enjoying them all, to various degrees.

    6. Sonic Lost World, Pokemon X/Y, Super Mario 3D World, Etrian Odyssey Untold: Millennium Girl, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101, Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD REmix, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team.

    7. Solitary, definitely. I don’t like my experience with a game being dependent on other people, though I certainly appreciate a good multiplayer romp every now and then.

    8. In the past year? I’m not really sure. Most of the games I’ve played this year have been sequels with characters that’ve already been established in years past, or new games with a focus on silent protagonists, who aren’t usually very interesting folks.

    9. Please, please, PLEASE knock it off with the time limits in games. I can count on half a hand the games which I felt have done them well, instead of simply shoehorning them in as a cheap way to create “tension”.

    10. Please, Nintendo, fix your account system.

    11. The blaming of used games for games doing poorly. I’d rather not have my consumer rights revoked because some company can’t do their job correctly.

    12. I don’t stick with online gaming communities long enough to have favorites.

    13. Having lots of unlockable content in-game without the need for DLC. Sakurai’s keeping it alive, though. If barely. ;-;

    14. Hmm. There’s a question I haven’t really given much thought to. Depends on the day, I suppose. Sometimes just to relax after a stressful day, other times to admire how much work was put into them, or challenge myself, or any number of reasons. Though nowadays, it’s usually the stress bit. Heh.

    15. Kingdom Hearts Re:coded. People give it a lot of crap for its supposed storyline irrelevance, but its gameplay and character progression systems are absolutely top-notch for the series, and make it a joy for me to actually play.

    16. Harry Potter as an FPS. If only for the opportunity to shoot Umbridge in her fat little face.

    17. Metal Gear Solid. It may as well be one already!

    18. *looks up from Animal Crossing: New Leaf* I’m sorry, what was the question?

    19. All the time. Always a poor decision. Will I ever stop? Not likely!

    20. If I wanted to be literal, I’d say Sonic the Hedgehog 2, as that was my first video game and the one that really hooked me on video games in general. But really, the appeal of being able to interact with a form of media and leave my own mark on it is something that no other form of media has ever quite managed to do for me, and it closely aligns with what I expect out of the games I play, as well.

    21. I guess most people would consider me “hardcore”, though I really don’t like that term. I spend most of my free time gaming and I’m fairly ‘in-the-know’ about most recent gaming news.

    22. Nothing gets me more hyped to try a game than a nice long gameplay trailer, or alternatively, a trailer with incredible music.

    23. A high-poly model of a nude Ryan Reynolds. Slowly rotating. That’s it.

    24. Not very. I can appreciate a good-looking game as much as anyone else, though they’ll always been pretty low-priority to me. The prettiest game in the world can still be incredibly boring to play.

    25. Great gameplay and mechanics are always the things that draw me in. A good soundtrack can also attract me to a game. Everything else is much appreciated, but ancillary for me.

    26. Wild guess? Around 40 hours or so.

    27. ~200 games. I probably won’t finish them all, but that’s fine. I’d rather have too many games to play than none at all.

    28. Sometimes. Though I try to refrain, as I don’t like dirtying up my controllers/handhelds.

    29. Unfortunately not. I really want to someday, though!

    30. Not at all. 5% at most, maybe? Probably less, considering the companies who make most of the stuff I play.

    31. Absolutely. God of War 3 went a weeeee bit too far with some scenes.

    32. Nope. AHM AN ADULT AND I CAN PLAY WUT AH WANT

    33. Sure, why not? Though it doesn’t matter to me whether they are or aren’t.

    34. I do, though I’m almost embarrassed to associate myself with that phrase nowadays.

  4. Jason Ragatz says:

    1. Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, 3DS, iPad, Windows Phone
    2. PS4, Xbox One, Wii U
    3. Games that are story-driven, games that are really unique, games that push the medium forward in some way
    4. Yes and no; I used to be a lot more into FPSes but that genre has gone pretty stale. I used to like JRPGs more but got tired of repetitive mechanics. I play a lot more games now so ideas that are fresh appeal more to me. Great original stories are one way to make something fresh. That said, I still enjoy the games that used to be my favorite.
    5. The Last of Us–YES. BioShock Infinite–YES. FIFA 13–duh. God of War Ascension–more or less.
    6. That haven’t released yet? I honestly don’t think there are 10 but I’ll try…Splinter Cell Blacklist, FIFA 14, Killzone Shadow Fall, Ryse Son of Rome, Forza 5, Halo Spartan Assault, Pokemon X/Y, Beyond: Two Souls…that’s about as far as I can get. The first half of the year was pretty loaded though.
    7. Mostly solitary, my favorite games tend to be single-player, story-driven experiences.
    8. Elizabeth from BioShock: Infinite
    9. There are so many things but I’m completely pulling a blank right now…I guess I’ll go with…how bad the major publishers are at marketing talent and how its creating this hegemony where only franchises can exist
    10. PLEASE HIRE ME! 😀
    11. Aforementioned over-reliance of franchises.
    12. Hmm…pretty much the only game I play online anymore is FIFA 13 so….
    13. Oh great question. And another one I’m drawing a blank on…
    14. Why do even you play video games? The give me enjoyment, they engage me in a way no other medium can, and there is still so much untapped potential in what can be done with interactive storytelling, which is still in its adolescence.
    15. It seems like the Tomb Raider reboot! Sounds crazy but I hear people bashing it all the time. For me it’s easily my GOTY frontrunner (although TLOU is going to give it a helluva run for its money and if it keeps on pace probably take it over, but still, TR is impeccably designed).
    16. All the Marvel stuff, because they are ripe for games and outside of a couple noteworthy gems their heroes have not been in very good games. Also, BOND. James Bond.
    17. I’m not really a big fan of this stuff. I think great games/movies will play to the strengths of their medium, so trying to translate them into a medium that is fundamentally different (passive vs interactive) robs the material of some of its appeal. That said, I’ll go with Halo, because that universe has shown it can support both passive and interactive stories.
    18. They are for me! Haha at least the great ones.
    19. Rarely. I might put it off for a bit. I need my sleep. “Skip”, never.
    20. They were fun.
    21. I’m not sure what this question is asking but I’ll take a stab…I’m the kind of gamer that likes to take in as many experiences as possible…games that are too long turn me off…I’m not typically concerned with beating games on hard and in some cases I’ll even play on easy.
    22. Marketing that banks on the creators. That kind of dodges the question but I need to bring that up every chance I get. Otherwise, I don’t know, good trailers.
    23. A great interactive story.
    24. It depends on the game, but in general extremely important. It affects immersion to a great degree. Obviously, I’d say artistic direction is what really matters versus “realism”. But there are definitely games that I definitely can’t play (or can no longer play) because of how they look. It sucks but that’s just the way it is.
    25. Story
    26. Oh jeez I don’t know…I would guestimate 15-20
    27. Humungous. Thanks Steam. My Xbox/PlayStation backlogs are also pretty sizeable. And already building a 3DS backlog….have an iPad one too. ugh.
    28. Ehh I’ve been cutting down on that stuff in general, regardless of gaming. I guess energy drinks though.
    29. Yes! GDC 2012 and E3 2013 🙂
    30. Tricky question…”most”…probably.
    31. Yes. BioShock Infinite. It just felt out of place.
    32. Content ratings? Not really. Reviews? yes.
    33. I believe this is a stupid question, they already are and have been for a long time. To deny that is to have zero comprehension of what art is.
    34. Absolutely, although I look forward to the day where that term is irrelevant because playing games is just that widespread. (for example, I’m also a reader and a movie-goer, but who says that to identify themselves?)

  5. Simon Torffvit says:

    1. Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Nintendo GameBoy, Nintendo DS, Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, PlayStation Portable, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 3, Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation Vita.
    2. Yes, PlayStation 4 at launch, and then probably Xbox One further down the line when I’ve saved up more money.
    3. Cinematic adventure games, and exploration-involved RPG’s. Uncharted and The Elder Scrolls are good examples, respectivly.
    4. When I was younger I liked doing silly and whacky things in video-games, probably because I had “GTA: San Andreas” in my possession. Now I’m more hardcore and involved with the games I play.
    5. Recently, I’ve going down a list of games I would like to finish, so right now I’m playing through “Assassin’s Creed II”, “Bioshock” and “Borderlands 2”.
    6. “Killzone: Mercenary”, “Tearaway”, “Pokemon X/Y”, “The Last of Us”, “Beyond: Two Souls”, “Grand Turismo 6”, “Grand Theft Auto V”, “RYSE: Son of Rome”, “Killzone: Shadowfall”, “FIFA 14”. “Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag”, “Battlefield 4” and “Watch Dogs”.
    7. Soliditary. Not because I prefer it, but because none of my friends are hardcore console-gamers like myself.
    8. Tie between “Joel” (The Last of Us) and “Trevor” (Grand Theft Auto V).
    9. Micro-transactions, hands down.
    10. Valve, count to three.
    11. How the free-to-play model continuously expands and takes over. Just look at how many iOS and Andriod apps have “in-app purchases”. It’s ridiculous.
    12. Little Big Planet. So much awesome creativity to be found there.
    13. Another tie. Offline multiplayer (split-screen, for example) and physical instruction manuals (more and more are becoming digital, which you cant read proudly in the bathroom).
    14. To experience moments I simply could not experience in real life.
    15. “Cel Damage: Overdrive”. Heard of it? Yeah, probably not. But it is awesome anyways (possible child-hood bias).
    16. Sword Art Online. I know it is a PSP-game in Japan, but as a european gamer, I would APPRECIATE a port. Even better, have it as a much more extensive PS3/PS4 game.
    17. Uncharted. I know it would just be another Indiana Jones… but that’s exactly why I want it!
    18. No. There is never a compulsive need to continue playing (unless you wanna finish a specific part of a game or get an achievement, which dont count).
    19. Only when I want to finish a specific part of a game or get an achievement, as mentioned above.
    20. A way to have fun without leaving my room. 😛
    21. Hardcore. I’d say so, at least.
    22. To show that the reason we play games is to experience things we would never get to experience in our every-day life. Sony seems to be capitalizing on that, which is great.
    23. Have characters interact to lines I say into a microphone. I don’t mean lines like “move forwards”, “take cover” or “follow me”, but full-on dialogue. I want to feel like I’m actually holding an interactive conversation.
    24. When it comes to having fun, graphics dont matter. But when it comes to immersion, they certainly do. That is why I love great graphics, because they make me feel like a part of the game, which is the experience I want.
    25. Characters and story.
    26. I’m on summer-break, so… 25 hours at least.
    27. As I briefly touched upon before, I have listed all of my PS3 games that I have yet to finish. It is about 18 left to go, but I will be buying more soon. Other console-games are not in my line of sight and I don’t like PC-gaming especially much.
    28. Not food, because I don’t want greasy fingers… I do drink energy drinks and soda though.
    29. Nope, I live in Sweden.
    30. Most, yes.
    31. Towards the ending of The Last of Us (very minor spoiler) you are given the option to shoot some doctors. I did, not knowing any better at the time, and it made me feel bad in after-hand (especially learning that it was optional).
    32. Nope.
    33. Certainly. If a painting of a tin-can is artistic, then sure as hell is “Journey” (PS3).
    34. ಠ_ಠ
Would I answer 34 gaming-questions and claim myself to be a hardcore-gamer (in an earlier question) if I wasn’t?
