Top 7 Video Game Animated Series Theme Songs

The history of animated series and video games aren’t as closely linked as we would like. While there was a push for this type of content in the late 80s/early 90s, it died down pretty quickly. But with the campaign for Splatoon ramping up, we couldn’t help but notice the familiarity in Nintendo’s marketing of their new IPs and cartoons of that era. As it often happens, this sent us down a Youtube spiral of great cartoon intros, and we wanted to share some of our favorites.

To narrow the scope, and to tie it back into Splatoon, we shall be taking a look at the 7 Best Theme Songs for animated series based on video games. The countdown begins!

7. Earthworm Jim – Not the first choice for a video game adaption, but the Earthworm Jim animated series proved to be charming and slightly endearing.

And it all began with Jim being a simple earthworm, but then he was the only one..

6. Pole Position – We actually didn’t know this was based off of a video game, but it had a short-stint as Nerds on the Rocks’ transition music because it’s actually has a pretty sweet melody.

5. Double Dragon – To this day, we’re not entirely sure where the concept of the show came from, but it gave us this pretty sweet song… once it gets through the mandatory narration.

4. Pokemon – The rock of video game cartoons. The Pokemon series has been going on for over 15 years, and this song, which started the original season, is part of the reason why.

It nicely sums up the purpose of the series, Pokemon and the journey we’re about to go on. It also makes cameos in all manners of things like Donkey Konga!

3. Super Mario World – Some would go with The Super Mario Bros Super Show theme, and while that would have made the list if we were doing multiple entries from a franchise, the Super Mario World takes the nod.

It’s simply different than many other theme songs of the time, and different from anything else on this list.

2. Mega Man -He’s a fighting robot…. Mega Man!

He also has one kick-ass theme. Try not to sing along.

1. Sonic SaTam – Sonic has one of the most bizarre relationships with animated series with some shows not even touching the concept and characters established in the franchise.

While this show is one such experimental project, it has given us one of the most memorable theme songs in the history of animation. And interestingly enough, a Sonic franchise that has really lived on beyond the show’s run.

There you have it, our Top 7 Best Video Game Animated Series Opening Theme Songs (because the title couldn’t be any longer), what do you think? Agree? Disagree with the list? Any glaring omissions? Let us know in the comments!
