Comic Book Review – Hack/Slash: Son of Samhain #1

Writers – Michael Moreci and Steve Seeleyhackslashsonofsamhain01_covera
Artist – Emilo Laiso

Michael Moreci and Steve Seeley first made a name for themselves at Image Comics with their creator-owned property, Hoax Hunters.  It’s a series following a mythbusters type group that uses that as a cover to search after real mythological and supernatural creatures.  If you’ve ever checked out that book (and if you haven’t, get on it), you can see how Michael Moreci and Steve Seeley were put on this earth to tell stories like Hack/Slash: Son of Samhain.

For those of  you that don’t know, Hack/Slash: Son of Samhain follows Cassie Hack as she reluctantly deals with the supernatural again.  This time, it’s also monsters.  Oh, and she brought her nail ridden bat and that sass you all love. Often times when you get a series that’s been around awhile like this, you’re so bogged down in continuity that even when they slap a #1 on it, it never really feels like a #1.  That is not the case with Hack/Slash: Son of Samhain #1.

Honestly, I can’t tell you the last time I read a Hack/Slash comic, so I was prepared to be a bit confused and in need of wikipedia to figure it all out.  You don’t need any of that.  This is actually written like it’s a #1.  Something that’s a little out of the ordinary, and very refreshing.  This book hits the ground running and remains welcoming while also having previously established characters like Cassie Hack which gives long time fans and readers an extra layer.

I’d be real bad at this whole reviewing thing if I didn’t mention how Emilo Laiso’s are makes this whole story come together.  He’s previously worked with Moreci and Seeley on Hoax Hunters, and it shows.  I really felt that every single panel had a purpose, moved the plot forward, and kept the book tight and fast paced.  The kind of thing you hear is supposed to be how comics are made, but you actually see less of than you’d hope.

Lastly, I think it’s important to note that this is a comic that also has a beginning, middle, and end.  Not a slow paced padded out comic that gives you just enough of a hook to make you begrudgingly try it again next month in the hopes that you get more out of it.  You are getting a complete story.  Oh, Moreci and Seeley don’t tie up the loose ends and leave you with plenty of more to want to come back to, but they reward you by also giving you a full story in one comic.  A rare reward these days.

Score 7 (out of 7) This is an issue #1 that welcomes you in to a larger world.  It’s quick witted, fast paced, monster killing fun.  Keep it up!

I've been an avid comic book fan since I first started actively following and collecting comics at ten years old. The first comic I picked up was Sonic The Hedgehog #28 at a local Kmart. Since then I've gone on to read and collect comics from a wide range of publishers, collect original comic book pages, commissions from some of my favorite artists, review comics with insertgeekhere, and even write my own comics. I began self publishing comics I had written in 2011, and currently work with a couple of small publishers as well.
